More lightning from the same storm over the Florida fire in the Santa Ritas on July 16. This bolt hit in Josephine Saddle - a favorite hiking destimation of ours. Watching this fire ravage one of our favorite parts of southern Arizona was difficult, but a recent hike to the summit of Mt. Wrightson made it painfully obvious that the area was in need of a fire to burn out the accumulated fuels in the area and hopefully this fire did that. This exposure was 10 seconds at f/2.8, ISO 400 with my 24mm lens on my Canon 20D. Posted by Picasa

Well it did more than remove dead and down litter. It was a preventable fire that should have been stopped in its infancy on the 7th. Controlled burns over time were a solution, but not allowed because of its "wilderness" status. Now a big chunk of it is in ruin for decades to come.

Yes, it was obvious from our hike through the area that it had not burned, controlled or not, in quite a long time. I agree that they should have been doing controlled burns in the area and there's still plenty of areas that must need controlled burns up there that did not get hit by the Florida fire. I'm not looking forward to seeing the fire damage....
