Baboquivari in the snow

Baboquivari Peak is the tallest peak in the Quinlan Mountains and is located south of Kitt Peak. Here it sits with its summit almost touching the clouds overhead on Sunday after a winter storm blanketed the area with about 6 inches of snow. This view is from Kitt Peak, near the 84 inch telescope, taken with my 24mm lens and an exposure of 1/500 seconds at f/7, ISO 100.

Lenticular clouds over Baboquivari

It was windy in southern Arizona on summit day. This view looks west towards Baboquivari which lies due south of Kitt Peak. These lenticular clouds are formed in the high winds. This image was then at 70mm focal length with an exposure of 1/500 seconds at f/8, ISO 100.

Fire south of Kitt Peak

A new fire is burning south of Kitt Peak. After a night of rumors about the fire which caused my imagination to run away with pictures of flames leaping up the south slopes of the mountain lapping at the metal domes and glass mirrors, I decided to take a morning hike over to the south ridge and see for myself. My worst fears were put to rest quickly as it was obvious the fire is burning far south of Kitt Peak fairly close to Baboquivari (the prominent peak in this image) and will have to jump over an area burned in a much more dangerous fire last year. This image was taken at 18mm focal length with an exposure of 1/250 seconds at f/5, ISO 200.

Baboquivari Sunset

Driving up to Kitt Peak on Wednesday afternoon, I broke out of a cloud layer and drove into some snow cover. Finally, I was presented this great view of Baboquivari to the south of Kitt Peak with snow in the hills in the foreground and clouds around the hills as well. This iamge was taken at 35mm focal length with an expsoure of 1/320 seconds at f/5.6, ISO 400.

Baboquivari

This is the view south from one of the wind vents on the side of the WIYN telescope dome. Sunset was approaching so the lighting was excellent. Baboquivari is the thumb-like peak at center. It is said to be the center of the Universe by the Tohono O'Odham Nation and home to their creator, I’itoli. Baboquivari is about 7,730 feet tall and is the high point in the Quinlan Mountains which also contain Kitt Peak. This image was taken with Dave's 12-24 Sigma lens at 12mm focal length with an exposure of 1/800 seconds at f/8, ISO 800 (yeah, lots of 8's...).
