Crowded Beach

Secret Beach got a bit crowded while we were wandering around it. This image was taken at 70mm focal length with an exposure of 1/500 seconds at f/8, ISO 200 with a circular polarizer.

More empty beach...

Except for us and the volcanic rocks, there weren't too many other folks around. There were some, just off down the beach a ways. This is the view of Secret Beach looking back towards the Kilauea Lighthouse with a wider view than the earlier image. This image was taken at 18mm focal length with an exposure of 1/500 seconds at f/8, ISO 400 with a circular polarizer.

Empty Kaua'i Beach?

Lots of footprints, but not a single beachgoer in this view! Don't worry, there were a few folks around, but just not as many as most other beaches we visited during our 2 weeks on Kaua'a. This is Secret Beach, looking west. There was a fairly steep trail leading from the parking lot above near some houses down to the beach. This image was taken at 55mm focal length with an exposure of 1/500 seconds at f/8, ISO 400 with a circular polarizer.

Kilauea Lighthouse from Secret Beach

Kilauea Lighthouse sits on top of a peninsula as you can see here with the island just offshore. Secret Beach was probably about the least crowded beach we visited and was a bit of a challenge to find (actually, we accidentally stumbled on it while geocache hunting - one of the great joys of geocaching which leads you to places you might not otherwise go). This image was taken at 55mm focal length with an exposure of 1/500 seconds at f/8, ISO 400 with a circular polarizer.

Waves and coastline

The view east from the peninsula that the Kilauea Lighthouse is on shows this little cove area that is surrounded by bird nests. The sea floor here is especially dramatic, especialy with a circular polarizer to cut down the glare from the water surface. This image was taken at 18mm focal length with an exposure of 1/200 seconds at f/8, ISO 400.

Northernmost point on Kaua'i

This little island is the northermost point associated with the island of Kaua'i, just north of the peninsula that the Kilauea Lighthouse sits atop. It is also a busy place for the many birds that live there. You can see lots of white specks which are really many birds on top of the rocks and the vegitation. This image was taken at 34mm focal length with an exposure of 1/160 seconds at f/8, ISO 400, with a circular polarizer.

Another view west from Kilauea Lighthouse

Here is another wider angled view to the west of Kilauea Lighthouse. Amazing how blue the water can be! This image was taken at 18mm focal length with an exposure of 1/400 seconds at f/8, ISO 400.

Westward view from the Kilauea Lighthouse

This view west along the northern coast from the Kilauea Lighthouse shows a fire in the fields in the distance as well as "Secret Beach" which we visited a little later. This image was taken at 70mm focal length with an exposure of 1/200 seconds at f/8, ISO 400 with a circular polarizer.

Roosting area

The ocean waves crash into the small cliffs at the basof this area. The white specks in the green vegitation are various types of birds roosting here. The birds were impressive, and not just the Red-footed Boobies. This image was taken at 70mm focal length with an exposure of 1/60 seconds at f/8, ISO 100 with a circular polarizer.

Red-footed Boobies

For those of you who like Boobies as much as I do, but don't know much about the Red-footed variety and want to learn more about them, here's one of the signs in the park next to the Kilauea Lighthouse to help identify the birds and describe them.

Boobie picture...

...Red Footed Boobies, that is. It was great - I got to shoot all the pictures I wanted of Boobies without any complaints from the subject or my wife! The Kiauea Lighthouse is also a preserve for birds and there were lots of them flying around making for great photographic subjects. This image ws taken at 300mm focal length with an exposure of 1/400 seconds at f/8, ISO 400.

Kilauea Lighthouse

The Kilauea Lighthouse is in one of the prettiest places. Colorful vegitation, bluest of blue water. Very pretty! This image was taken at 70mm focal length with an exposure of 1/100 seconds at f/11, ISO 100 with a circular polarizer.

Kilauea Lighthouse

Located on Kilauea Point, the Kilauea Lighthouse is on the northernmost point on the island of Kaua'i. The small island just north of the point is the northernmost point in the Hawaiian Islands. The area is a haven for birds as well as tourists. This image was taken at 18mm focal length with an exposure of 1/800 seconds at f/5, ISO 400 with a circular polarizer.

The Kiddie Pool

This little tidal pool and the small "river" that connects it is frequented by mothers with their young children. You can see the jetty that bounds Nawiliwili harbor and the mountains on the other side of the harbor in the distance. This image was taken at 55mm focal length with an exposure of 1/250 seconds at f/11, ISO 400 with a circular polarizer.

Beach activity

Here's another view across Kalipaki Beach which shows many typical activities found on the beach. A canoe rests in the foreground. A volleyball net is without any players, but a fellow with a boogie board is walking across it Some folks are enjoying the sun beyond the umbrella at right and some more are playing in the waves. On some days you can find surfers out in the waves as well (actually, I think I see 2 of them on the left part of the image, one riding an unimpressive wave towards shore). There are some sailboats at the left as well. This image was taken at 18mm focal length with an exposure of 1/250 seconds at f/10, ISO 400, with a circular polarizer.

Chlorine in paradise

I didn't touch any chlorine filled pools during my 2 weeks on Kaua'i, with all the beaches around to enjoy instead.... But some people enjoy swimming and sitting at the pool. This one is at the Marriott Kaua'i on Kalipaki Beach, visible beyond the pool and palm trees. This iamge was taken at 18mm focal length with an exposure of 1/250 seconds at f/10, ISO 400.
