Kitt Peak covered in Snow and clouds.

Not a good night for observing on Kitt Peak.  The Steward Observatory 90 inch Bok Telescope is just visible through the summit level clouds as the Sun sets on the western horizon.  This image was taken with my Galaxy Note 4 camera on Friday night, January 8th.

Snow on Kitt Peak

It was a winter wonderland on Tuesday - we got about 1.5 inches of snow on Kitt Peak. After shoveling a path, I took this photo with my 10mm fisheye lens with an exposure of 1/400 seconds at f/8, ISO 100.

Baboquivari in the snow

Baboquivari Peak is the tallest peak in the Quinlan Mountains and is located south of Kitt Peak. Here it sits with its summit almost touching the clouds overhead on Sunday after a winter storm blanketed the area with about 6 inches of snow. This view is from Kitt Peak, near the 84 inch telescope, taken with my 24mm lens and an exposure of 1/500 seconds at f/7, ISO 100.

84 inch and snow

I hiked around the mountain mid-afternoon on Sunday. We were having a few snow flurries, but much of the snow that had fallen over night and early in the morning was still around. Here, the Kitt Peak 84 inch telescope sits on top of a snow covered hill. This image was taken with my 24mm lens with an exposure of 1/500 seconds at f/7, ISO 100.

Winter Wonderland

We got about 6 inches of snow last night and this morning on Kitt Peak. It's starting to clear and the snow is starting to melt. Here is the Spacewatch 36 inch dome with the sun poking out of the clouds. This image was taken with my 10mm fisheye lens with an exposure of 1/800 seconds at f/11, ISO 400.

Snow and clouds

It snowed during the day on Sunday and overnight on Sunday night with about 1-2 inches accumulated. Most of the snow was gone by the time I got up on Monday except for on the north sides of hills and buildings, and under trees. This view towards the south ridge of Kitt Peak from the top of the 36 inch dome looks into areas that are still snow covered. This image was taken with my 24mm lens with an exposure of 1/400 seconds at f/8, ISO 100.

Snow covered sunrise

There was no observing this night - last Wednesday night. As the morning twilight brightens the eastern sky, snow still covers the top of Mt. Graham with the SMT and LBT visible in this image. The image was taken with my 24mm lens with an exposure of 3.2 seconds at f/4.0, ISO 400.

Snowy sunset

The sun came out late in the day as the storm that brought us so much snow moved out. Though it stayed cloudy most of the night, it was clear by the next morning. This image was taken at 24mm focal length with an exposure of 1/320 seconds at f/8, ISO 100.

Winter on Mt. Graham

A bit of a surprise at how much snow fell up here on Mount Graham yesterday. I was expecting at best fluries or maybe an inch, but it was snowy and cold most of the day with about 4-6 inches accumulated. This image shows the SMT in the foreground with the LBT appearing to come out of the misty clouds. The image was taken with my 24mm lens at f/8 with an exposure of 1/250 seconds, ISO 100.

Snow covered Painted Desert

We were away for the weekend in northeast Arizona for a teachers workshop which my wife helped run. On the way back home, we spend Sunday at the Painted Desert and Petrified Forest National Park, following a loop road through beautiful sno covered views of the Painted Desert such as this one as well as archeological sites and fields of petrified wood. Here, you can see the spectacular colors of the Painted Desert partly masked by snow from last weeks stormy weather. This image was taken with my 24mm lens with an exposure of 1/1000 seconds at f/11, ISO 400.

Driving up to Kitt Peak on Wednesday afternoon, I broke out of a cloud layer and drove into some snow cover. Finally, I was presented this great view of Baboquivari to the south of Kitt Peak with snow in the hills in the foreground and clouds around the hills as well. This iamge was taken at 35mm focal length with an expsoure of 1/320 seconds at f/5.6, ISO 400.

Snowy Saguaro

I found this snow covered Saguaro Cactus along Golden Gate road in the Saguaro National Park. The snow was melting fast, but still clung to the north side of many of the hills and cacti. This image was taken at 55mm focal length with an exposure of 1/2500 seconds at f/8, ISO 400.

Prehistoric Rock Art?

I found this little snow man on one of the signs at Signal Hill in the Saguaro National Park. About 20 minutes later as I hiked out of the area, the snowman was completely melted. That's snow in Tucson for you. This image was taken at 70mm focal length, with an exposure of 1/3200 seconds at f/8, ISO 400.

Cholla on ice

Normally these two cholla cacti would look almost lethal with their spine filled bombs, but covered in snow, they don't look quite so dangerous. This image was taken at 70mm focal length with an exposure of 1/1000 seconds at f/11, ISO 400.
